Approaching the Observatorium Concrete Sand Dune with a Fine Art Photography Lens

Recently, the Rotterdam beachscape welcomed a new and unique addition – the Observatorium concrete sand dune. This stunning structure, designed by the Dutch design and research studio, serves as a breakwater and provides a visually captivating scene with its concrete surface covered in a pattern of circular holes reflecting the movement of the sea and sky. As a fine art photographer, I had the opportunity to approach this sand dune with my lens and capture its beauty in a unique way.

The geometric shapes and lines of the sand dune offered a challenge and an opportunity for my photography. The circular holes in the surface created a beautiful abstract form, and the play of light and shadow added depth and texture to my images. I approached the sand dune with a focus on capturing these geometric shapes and lines, as well as the interplay between light and shadow.

I utilized different angles to showcase the sand dune in a variety of ways. Shooting from a low angle allowed me to capture the height and grandeur of the structure, while shooting from a high angle provided a different perspective and showcased the intricate details of the circular holes. I also experimented with different lighting conditions, including sunrise and sunset, to create images with a warm and soft light or a dramatic and bold light.

In addition to the geometric shapes and lines, I also focused on capturing the movement of the sea and sky. The reflections of the water and the clouds on the surface of the sand dune added another layer of beauty to my images. I utilized long exposures to create a sense of motion and movement in my photographs, further emphasizing the connection between the sand dune and its surroundings.

In conclusion, approaching the Observatorium concrete sand dune with a fine art photography lens provided me with the opportunity to showcase its beauty in a unique and visually stunning way. The interplay between light and shadow, the geometric shapes and lines, and the movement of the sea and sky all contributed to the creation of a visually captivating set of images. I am proud to share my work with others and offer a glimpse into the beauty of this amazing structure.
