The MABE area encompasses 4,144 acres surrounding the Zidani Monastery, where asbestos was first identified by private individuals in 1935. The plant had a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year. However, following the classification of asbestos as a health hazard due to its carcinogenic properties, mining and processing activities at MABE, which supplied asbestos for both domestic and international markets, were halted in March 2000.

Following the cessation of operations, it was considered an absolute necessity to carry out environmental remediation. The remediation project started on a pilot basis, with three contractors, the then prefecture of Kozani under Paschalis Mitliaga and two private parties, carrying out EU-funded studies, initially to investigate the type of asbestos and what should be done for the environment and its remediation.

Upon the completion of this project, the lining of the slopes commenced, as the previous factory was operating without proper oversight, leading to the improper handling and disposal of asbestos materials. The urgency of the rehabilitation initiative was prompted by the decision to supply water to Thessaloniki from the Aliakmonas River, necessitating the cleanup of the Aliakmonas. The foremost priority in the rehabilitation efforts was the restoration of the MABE site, where air, soil, and water quality were addressed. This was subsequently followed by biological treatment initiatives in the vicinity of Lake Polyphytou, encompassing areas such as Velvento, Servia, Imera, and Kozani.

In light of the recent project completions, we have observed significant transformations in the area. This initiative represents a crucial environmental restoration effort that not only enhances the quality of life for local residents but also contributes to the preservation of the water table. According to the Environmental Centre of the Region of Western Macedonia, the area now boasts a positive environmental footprint. Where there was once a hazardous asbestos-laden surface, we now have a safe, asbestos-free environment.
